Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) function as the game’s native token and can be earned by completing tasks within the game, which allows players to collect, breed, battle and trade in-game pets known as Axies. The game was launched in 2018 by Trung Nguyen, who is also the co-founder of the game development company, Sky Mavis. AXS can also be traded as an independent cryptoasset on various exchanges. Axie Infinity is not unique. Other “play to earn” games with unique cryptoassets incorporated into them exist. However, Axie Infinity is one of the largest and fastest growing, with more than 2 million daily users as of October 2021.
