Ethereum Classic, or ETC, is a cryptoasset in the Ethereum network. It was launched in 2016 after a hard fork in the Ethereum community created both ETC and the more famous ETH cryptoassets. While much smaller than ETH, ETC has gained significant traction and has become one of the more well-known cryptoassets in the market. Ethereum Classic is an open source blockchain platform implementing smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps). Ethereum Classic continues to work towards Ethereum’s original goal of creating a global payment network that functions without the support of a centralized governance. As well as this, Ethereum Classic has stated that they will continue to use a Proof-of-Work consensus, unlike Ethereum who are transitioning to Proof-of-Stake. Another difference is that ETC tokens are capped at just over 210 million tokens, whereas ETH has no cap. As of September 2021, there are nearly 130 million tokens in circulation.
