Anglo-Australian multinational Rio Tinto is the second biggest metals, mining and mineral processing corporation in the world. Founded in 1873 and initially trading in copper, it has branched out to become a global leader in iron ore, aluminium, uranium and diamond extraction. Its headquarters are located in Melbourne, Australia. Rio Tinto operates globally, with work taking place in 35 countries throughout the world. In 2022, the company employs approximately 49,345 members of staff for its operations, who work in the company’s mines, smelters, refineries, offices, data centres and research labs. In 2007 the company expanded its asset portfolio by acquiring the Canadian company Alcan, and went on in 2011 to acquire Turquoise Hill Resources.
