A product of the 2007 merger between construction corporations Taylor Woodrow and George Wimpey, Taylor Wimpey plc is British- based, with headquarters located in High Wycombe. Taylor Woodrow was founded by Frank Taylor at the ripe age of 16, back in 1921. Initially focusing on home construction, the company diversified in the 1930s, expanding to temporary hospital construction. Before the 2007 merger, Taylor Woodrow was involved in two key acquisitions: Birmingham-based Bryant Group in 2001 for £556 million and Wilson Connolly in 2003 for £499 million. George Wimpey is even older than Taylor Woodrow, starting in 1880 as part of a stoneworking partnership in Hammersmith. After the death of its founder in 1913, the company was purchased by Godfrey Way Mitchell, who opted to keep the original name. George Wimpey was the largest builder of residential homes in the UK for much of the 1970s. Similar to Taylor Woodrow, George Wimpey was involved in several noteworthy acquisitions before the 2007 merger, including McAlpine Homes in 2001 for £463 million and Laing Homes in 2002 for £295 million. Taylor Wimpey is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is also part of the FTSE 100 Index. The company stock ticker is TW.L. Prior to the 2007 merger, both Taylor Woodrow and George Wimpey were publicly traded companies. Find out more about TW.L and track its value changes on the trading platform.
